The history of Groene Hart is that of a young school. Groene Hart dates back to the autumn of 2001, but actually, the history begins in 1995.
Actually, the history begins in 1995 when the Christian school community Johannes Calvijn, through a merger with the Carnissecollege (a pre-vocational secondary education school), gets the opportunity to start a lower secondary havo/vwo in Barendrecht. In September 1995, Johannes Calvijn starts with one vmbo/havo class and one havo/vwo class. This start proves to be successful; the following year, the number of classes triples.
Due to these developments and the growth in the number of students in pre-vocational secondary education (vmbo), the building at Botter 135 is starting to burst at the seams. The building is becoming too small to safely accommodate all students and staff. After much deliberation, the municipality assigns us a location at 3e Barendrechtseweg 450. Eventually, after the autumn break in 2001, the students of the second-year havo/vwo and gymnasium classes and the students of the third-year vwo and havo classes can take their places in the new building. At that moment, together with the teachers and the concierge, they become the true pioneers of the very beginning. One of those pioneers is a second-year student who, through a written competition, comes up with the name for this new school: Groene Hart.
In September 2002, the first-year havo/vwo and gymnasium students also joined this small location, completing the lower grades. As of September 2004, we started the upper grades for havo and vwo at Groene Hart.
In August 2006, the vmbo/havo students enrolled at Groene Hart. That year, we also moved into the building at 3e Barendrechtsweg 448.
In 2010, we started our bilingual education program (tto) at vwo, havo, and mavo levels. In 2013, the school was awarded the junior tto certificate. Preparations for the final new building began in the summer of 2009. Construction of the new building started in December 2011. Mecanoo architects from Delft designed a particularly beautiful building for us, which meets the wishes of its users. The building has three wings, each with three floors. The wings converge in a central triangle, where it is clearly visible that the floors are staggered (split level). In one of the educational wings, there are not only classrooms but also a learning plaza. Such a learning plaza is part of the educational space. In January 2013, we moved to our new building at Haarspitwei 11. Since April 2016, we have also been using the multifunctional facility realized by the municipality to accommodate the growth in the number of students.
In January 2013 we will move to our new building at Haarspitwei 11.
