Bilingual education

Broaden your horizon

GroeneHart 1228

Personal development, global citizenship, and language development
Bilingual education (tto) connects and offers an extra challenge. Moreover, it prepares students well for an increasingly international society. Of course, annual trips abroad are included in the program to improve English language skills and further broaden their worldview.

The bar is set high

TTO students complete their education with exceptionally good results. We set the bar high, and the student is willing to go above and beyond. Our goal is to help students develop into young adults who, with a clear perspective on the world, pursue their (English-taught) further studies as engaged global citizens. The worldwide trend of globalization is making English increasingly the global lingua franca.

Indispensable language skills

For bilingual education, language proficiency is of course essential. Approximately half of the subjects are therefore taught in English, by English-speaking teachers, using an English-language method. We also expect bilingual students to speak English with each other (at least during English-language lessons and excursions).

European and international orientation

Knowledge about Europe and experience with the associated countries are also part of the bilingual education (tto) program. Tto therefore has two important goals: promoting good language proficiency through CLIL education (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and providing a European and international orientation (EIO). Tto creates a broader perspective on the world. Gaining international experiences contributes to a strong European and international orientation for the student, which is not only of great importance for the student’s current development, but also for his/her future.

International perspective

English language proficiency

Of course, language proficiency is important in bilingual education. That’s why we encourage you to communicate in English from your very first day at school. TTO students speak English with each other as much as possible, and subjects such as history, geography, and biology are taught in English in the lower years. Since English is not only the language of instruction but also the language of communication, you learn to master the language faster and better. In addition, you take separate, recognized, external language exams. For MAVO, these are Anglia or Cambridge exams. For HAVO and VWO, the aim is to graduate with an internationally recognized IB diploma. This way, you broaden your horizons!

Global Citizenship

As a bilingual school, we offer the curriculum as much as possible from an international perspective to help you develop global citizenship. We organize international days and collaborative projects, allowing you to gain knowledge about various cultures while also gaining insight into your own cultural development. The building blocks of attitude, knowledge, skills, and values form the main focus points of global citizenship.

Masterclass bilingual education

Will you come and get to know bilingual education (tto)?

Personal development

Schools can demonstrate that their students achieve the aforementioned personal characteristics: the students are able to reflect, are engaged, responsible, creative, enterprising, and resilient. Schools are challenged to show which goals they set in this area and how these become visible. This can be done, for example, by interviewing alumni, compiling portfolios, or organizing presentations. The IB Learner Profile also provides a useful guide to illustrate how schools work on ‘personal development’. Schools are given freedom in this regard.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Waar staan de letters tto voor?

These letters stand for bilingual education.

Wat is het verschil met de reguliere, Nederlandstalige opleidingen?

TTO provides an in-depth and broadening experience for every program we offer at Portus Groene Hart, including vwo, havo, and mavo. Below you can read more in detail about what the program entails.

Wat houdt tto precies in?

TTO means that students take classes in both English and Dutch. In the lower years, at least fifty percent of the classes for VWO and HAVO, and at least thirty percent for MAVO, are taught in English. In addition, we pay a lot of attention to internationalization, which fits our global society. This is not only done during lessons but also through regular exchanges and study trips that take place with and to other TTO schools.

Welke meerwaarde heeft tto voor leerlingen?

Students gain significantly more insight into the world around them and master the English language at a high level. Dutch universities of applied sciences and universities are also becoming increasingly bilingual, and a large part of the study material in many further education programs is in English. A student from Portus Groene Hart who has completed the bilingual education program has, in addition to the vwo, havo, or mavo diploma, also obtained other certificates/diplomas.

Research by the European Platform has shown that students who follow bilingual education often master other languages more quickly, are able to think more critically, have a broader perspective, and often experience an overall advantage over fellow students in further education.

Welke internationaal erkende certificaten/diploma’s kunnen leerlingen behalen?

In the lower years and in mavo 4, students can obtain Anglia certificates. This allows Dutch students to demonstrate their level of English, which is beneficial for their CV and an advantage for the student as a future employee.

Upper-year vwo and havo students can also obtain an IB diploma (International Baccalaureate) 'English A: Language and Literature'. This is not only advantageous for the CV, but also opens doors to colleges and universities both in the Netherlands and abroad. With the IB diploma, you are welcome at more than two thousand universities worldwide. It is proof that you have an excellent command of the English language and are able to approach, analyze, and interpret cultural issues from context, which is also useful for further studies.

Is tto gebonden aan leerjaren?

The entire program, from the first year up to and including the final exam year, is bilingual. In the lower years, more lessons are taught in English than in the upper years. In the upper years, it is mandatory to offer the exam subjects, except for English of course, in Dutch to prepare students as well as possible for the exams. Only the non-exam subjects, such as physical education, social studies, and cultural and artistic education (CKV), are taught in English. European and international orientation (EIO) is a continuous focus in all year groups.

Zijn er problemen bij de overgang van het Engels naar het Nederlands wat betreft de eindexamenvakken?

Research by the European Platform has shown that students are not affected by this change. The students have learned the same material in a different language. The Dutch terminology has also been introduced in the lower years, and our own experience shows that the transition for students is very quick and smooth.

Maken tto-leerlingen voor het vak Engels het reguliere Nederlandse eindexamen?

Yes, the subject English is also included in the standards of the Dutch final exam.

Kunnen alleen kinderen van wie de Engelse taalvaardigheid al goed is, de tto-opleiding volgen?

No, at the beginning the level is not really important, because that is exactly what we will work on at school. It is much more important that a student is motivated and also willing to invest extra time and energy in bilingual education.

Wat is belangrijk voor de toelating?

A student who wishes to qualify for bilingual education (tto) must, of course, meet the regular admission requirements. In addition, strong motivation, an excellent work ethic, and perseverance are important. A ‘bilingual attitude’ (that is, the willingness to always speak English during tto lessons or activities) is also essential.

Geeft de hoeveelheid Engels problemen voor het niveau van het Nederlands?

No, this has never been shown or established. In addition, the European Platform checks whether the students' results remain at least at the same level as those of students in Dutch-speaking classes.

Kan ik mijn vragen over tto op Portus Groene Hart ook persoonlijk aan iemand stellen?

Of course, that possibility exists. The TTO coordinator, Mrs. van Rijswijk, is happy to answer any questions, so feel free to email j.a.van.rijswijk@cvo-portus.nl or call Portus Groene Hart (0180 390393).
