Bridging class

In the first year, there is a so-called one-year bridge period. Students follow either regular education or bilingual education (tto). Tto focuses on global citizenship and personal development, with English as the language of instruction and the main ‘tool’. In the first year, there are so-called combined classes: havo-vwo and mavo-havo. In addition, there are separate vwo classes (both regular and tto).

Special programs

The vwo classes all follow the Eureka program. This program focuses on personal development, research, design, and philosophy. The program continues into the higher years. In all regular first-year classes, we offer the sports program. This program is also continued in the second year. It is intended for students who are interested in a wide range of sports and are motivated to engage in sports in various ways, both inside and outside of school. In the mavo and havo departments, there is also a continuous sports learning pathway with LO2 (mavo) and pre-BSM (havo).

Year 2

In year 2, we also work with the so-called "dakpanklas" (2m/h and 2h/v). In this way, we have an extra year to determine the appropriate level for mavo, havo, or vwo.

Sports Test/TTO Intake

For our TTO program and sports curriculum, we schedule an intake (test) for new students after the enrollment period. For TTO education, a ‘bilingual attitude’ (that is, the willingness to always speak English during TTO lessons or activities) is particularly important.

Intake procedure bilingual education

We ask the student, among other things, to give a short presentation about themselves and we schedule an introductory interview. If a student has applied for the sports program, we conduct a test in which we assess their athletic abilities and motivation. During this test, various athletic skills are evaluated. The components include games, a fitness test, and an extensive circuit. After the test, it takes a few days before the results are sent by email.

Upper secondary pre-vocational education

In year 2, the student has chosen a subject package for year 3 of mavo. In year 3 mavo, the student then chooses their final subject package within a profile. In mavo 3, students also partially start with the school exams. In the student’s final exam package in year 4 mavo, out of the seven or eight subjects (depending on the profile), Dutch, English, and social studies (completed in year 3) are compulsory.

The curriculum

The subject package is determined by a chosen profile, supplemented with a choice from the subjects French, German, mathematics, history, geography, physics (nask1), chemistry (nask2), biology, economics, drama, visual arts (drawing), and physical education 2 (PE2). The subjects PE, Arts, and Career Orientation must be completed by the students with at least a pass. Starting from the 2021-2022 school year, students can choose the subject Economics and Entrepreneurship (E&O), one of the practical subjects within the mavo.

Second phase of senior general secondary education (havo) and pre-university education (vwo)

In the second phase, there are four profiles, both at pre-university (vwo) and senior general secondary (havo) level. Each student chooses one of the following profiles or a combination of two profiles:

  • Culture and Society (CM)
  • Economics and Society (EM)
  • CM and EM
  • Science and Health (NG)
  • Science and Technology (NT)
  • NG and NT

Subject package

Each profile has specific profile subjects. In addition to these subjects, there is a common part with subjects such as Dutch, English, and physical education, followed by all students. The school-specific part also consists of components for everyone, including religious education, career orientation, and the excursion abroad.

In addition, there is a compulsory elective exam subject. For these subjects, a minimum of 15 students per year group is required. Students who have sufficient ability and motivation can take one or more extra subjects in addition to the elective exam subject, provided this is feasible in terms of assessment and scheduling. The regulations for choosing an extra subject can be found on the parent portal.

Language education

Target language is the language of instruction

During German, English, and French lessons, our school applies the principle that the target language is the language of instruction. Using the target language during modern foreign language lessons increases learning efficiency.

In practice, this means that oral and written instructions are given as much as possible in the target language, tests are in the target language, and we expect students to have a positive attitude towards using the target language and to interact collegially with each other. During lessons, students regularly work together in the target language.

Bilingual Education (TTO)

At Groene Hart, TTO operates as a separate department running parallel to the regular curriculum. TTO focuses on three pillars: global citizenship, English language proficiency, and personal development. This programme is at the forefront of national TTO objectives and developments (TTO 2.0 by Nuffic).

In the lower years, TTO classes are independent groups, with a large part of the subjects taught in English. The emphasis is on expanding English vocabulary and placing subjects in an international context. In addition, we organise project days and students maintain a portfolio.

In the upper years, the nature of TTO changes: most subjects are once again offered in Dutch, so that students are well prepared for their exams. The TTO programme is shaped through project days, the portfolio, international contacts, and internships. In the upper years of havo and vwo, students also work on the IB programme, which concludes with an internationally recognised exam. With all these components, we follow Nuffic guidelines to safeguard our position as a senior TTO school.
