Successful exchange week Portus Groene Hart and Gymnasium Louny

From September 14 to 21, Portus Groene Hart welcomed a group of secondary school students from Gymnazium Václava Hlavatého in Louny, Czech Republic. For a week, the students and their supervisors got to know Barendrecht, the region, and each other.

The Czech visitors stayed with host families and participated in a varied program together with their Dutch peers. They visited Rotterdam and Kinderdijk, attended Prinsjesdag in The Hague, and walked along the Scheveningen beach. The program also included a day in Amsterdam, featuring a visit to the Anne Frank House and a walking tour through the Jordaan.

Mayor Schneider officially welcomed the guests at the town hall. During this meeting, the students presented their ideas about the influence of social media and artificial intelligence. The mayor concluded the gathering with a passionate speech about genuine human contact. The core of his message was that no form of A.I. can ever replace real connections like those the students experience during a week like this. It was a message that everyone wholeheartedly agreed with.

On Friday, the students spent the entire day at Portus Groene Hart. After attending several classes, it was time to capture the exchange week through creative vlogs. In the afternoon, the exchange participants presented these vlogs to each other, parents, and members of the Barendrecht–Louny city partnership. The students’ enthusiasm made a clear impression on the audience.

To conclude the successful week, a party was held at Portus Groene Hart and the participants enjoyed a dinner at Pannenkoekenhuis De Wensboom.

After spending one last enjoyable day with their host families, the Czech guests departed early Sunday morning for home. The group from Louny had to be at Eindhoven Airport by 5:00 a.m. Everyone was already looking forward to September next year, when the return visit to Louny is scheduled.
