Last Friday, Portus Groene Hart welcomed over two thousand visitors on yet another highly successful open day. Many primary school students and their parents or guardians braved the cold to come and get acquainted.
Some were particularly interested in the specially developed, challenging Eureka program for pre-university students, while others were very enthusiastic about the sports class. Many visitors also came to learn more about the bilingual education (tto). Portus Groene Hart offers this not only at pre-university and senior general secondary education levels, but also at the pre-vocational secondary education level, which is unique in the region. After students had managed to fill their passport with stamps by completing assignments in the special tto wing, a delicious treat awaited them in the characteristic English red double-decker bus parked in the schoolyard next to the Cruyff court. Of course, there were also visitors who wanted to get acquainted with the regular educational opportunities at the school.
All guests were assigned one of two identical routes, after which they were allowed to walk around the wing so characteristic of the Groene Hart building. This way, they could experience the relatively small scale for themselves.
It was possible to walk the route together with one of the many students who enthusiastically provided guided tours, but walking through the school independently was of course also an option.
The always appealing BINAS and art wing once again attracted a lot of attention. In biology, the program included dissecting an animal eye, heart, and lungs. The physics teachers introduced students to various light effects in the dark. In chemistry, visiting students in the beautiful lab, for example, inflated plastic gloves through a chemical reaction and vacuum-sealed treats. In the art wing, primary school students made their own windmill, saw what 3D printers can create, drew countless facial expressions, and expressed themselves musically on the keyboard or with other instruments.
All of this gave visitors a good impression of the school. They were impressed by the large number of students who helped out as ambassadors in all sorts of ways. The guests left satisfied—with a goodie bag in hand—after sometimes spending more than four hours at the school.
Of course, the school management is not only very grateful to all its participating students for their efforts, but also to all colleagues and, not to forget, the traffic controllers who managed the huge crowds so well. The enthusiastic visitors made the successful open day complete.
