Special leave

Pupils generally go on holiday only during the school holidays. In exceptional cases, additional leave may be granted.

In the following cases, you can request special leave:

The parents/guardians are required by their employer to take their (only) holiday outside the designated school holidays. They must provide an employer’s statement clearly indicating the necessity of this. It must also be evident that it is not possible to take two consecutive weeks of holiday at another time in the year than requested.

If there is an explicit medical recommendation to take a holiday, the parents/guardians must provide a doctor’s statement with reasons.

Request leave

For special leave requests, you must submit an application form to the department head. The leave form is an official document from the municipality of Barendrecht.

With the form, you add documents that support the application. Think of an invitation/card for a funeral, cremation, or wedding, or an employer's statement. The school is required to provide the supporting documents during an inspection of compliance with the Compulsory Education Act. Without these supporting documents, we cannot process the application.

Assessment

The department head will then assess the leave request according to the regulations and approve or reject the request and inform you of the decision (applications must be submitted at least six weeks in advance according to legal regulations).

If parents/guardians have not applied for an exemption from school attendance, or if it has not been granted, absence from school will be considered unauthorized. In that case, the attendance officer is authorized to draw up an official report.

  • Funeral / cremation (six-week rule does not apply)
  • Wedding in the immediate family circle
  • Religious holidays
